a rose by any other name, or the beautiful truth of chelsea manning

it’s official! pvt manning, having embraced a deep personal truth, is now chelsea.

my daughter and i had a lesson in heroism yesterday as part of our homeschool session. our literature readings have included stories of legendary heroes, and of course many of these are warriors of one sort or another.

after reading “mulan” we had a discussion about what really made her a hero. was it that she had proved to be mighty in battle and even achieved the level of general? was it that she took on someone else’s duty in order to spare her family hardship?

the part of the story that most affected my 10 year old transgender daughter was when mulan took off her helmet and cropped her hair, basically into a crewcut. the idea that she forfeited her female identity in order to go off to war with the troops, was one that was devasting to ziona!

our discussion of modern day heroes followed up the story of mulan. a current events tie-in that made mention of other kinds of heroism, like NOT going to war, like a soldier putting down his weapon and refusing to kill, or activists protesting, or hacktivists exposing the lies of the government, lies used to justify murder.

that brought up a couple of, by now, household names…julian assange, wikileaks, the collective known as anonymous, edward snowden and of course pvt manning.

today, with the announcement verified by chelsea herself, that she is indeed a woman and will continue to live in that truth from now on, we once again discussed the heroism of pvt manning. who, like mulan, sacrificed her identity as a woman, only in Chelsea’s case it was more to try to become what society and her birth certificate have always insisted was reality. but as in the truths she uncovered and subsequently shared with the world about the US govt and its war crimes, she began to doff her own lies, so that she could become the woman she’s always felt she was.

as liberating as that must be for her at a time when the US will almost assuredly take away her freedom for most of the rest of her life, it also adds depth to the story of the soldier who could not tell a lie…any longer.

altho immediate rumours have been that the armed services will deny her the hormone treatment and other medical procedures, it bears notice that in Massachusetts, a person guilty and serving time for murder has received a judgement that she must be allowed to transition fully.

it is unlawful to deny medical and/or psychiatric treatment to a person in custody. hopefully all the right people will force this issue in the case of chelsea manning.

from my daughter’s point of view, just having felt compelled to renounce the femininity ms. manning has always known to be true, in order to try to fit the cis-normative society’s designated place for her was already an unthinkable self-sacrifice! from my daughter’s point of view, she is a bigger hero today than yesterday, only because today we know the depth of her soul.

having embraced her own truth, shed the lies, and come clean so to speak, we are reminded that her desire to put things right didn’t stop at revealing hard truths about our govt. she told the world her own truth too!

Twenty-One questions on trans issues answered

this site is one i frequent.

as the supportive parent of a transgender daughter it has informative views from within the trans-community.

anyone who is interested in being an advocate of equality should seek avail themselves of accessing viewpoints of those within the various still oppressed communities. rather than those of ‘gatekeepers’.

this is such a place and this post in particular is a great place to start.

enjoy

Badly Reasoned: Why The CO Transgirl Should Not Be Segregated

this blogger is among my favorite of those i follow. read on and see how succinctly she unravels the whole ‘where to pee’ argument with regard to Coy, a beautiful young transgender elementary age girl in colorado.

Badly Reasoned: Why The CO Transgirl Should Not Be Segregated.

and as a person raising a transgender daughter, i can tell you that the last thing another child using the same restroom as her would see is the ‘spare parts’ that she can’t bear even to look upon while getting in and out of the bath or dressing herself. my daughter is so self conscious about them she even asks me to close my eyes if i’m in the bathroom to help her out of the tub. and immediately covers herself with a robe.

it comes to this!

so much has been in recent media, both t.v. and written journals, here and abroad, about transgender issues. for the most part i try to focus on the positives, the progress made, the greater understanding because of exposure, the protections being finally fought for the whole of the transgender/transsexual community and the recognition of the needs exclusive to them ~ medical, societal and otherwise. i tend to be a ‘cup half-ful’ kind of person anyway.

so when the burchills of this world begin with their vapid and hateful tirades against transgender folk i don’t let it rile me to any greater extant than i allow my blatantly racist and idiotic uncle’s remarks about blacks and other people of color. it just isn’t worth ruining my day over their bullshit. but whereas my uncle only sends out emails to folk who either manage to overlook his idiocy because of a blood relationship (i just delete anything with his address on it) or the few throwbacks of that dying (thank gods) breed that actually share his views he is only able to reach a few, but the burchills and rush limbaughs of this world have a much broader platform. and yes, i did just equate judy burchill with rush.

i let the whole media furor in and out of my thoughts chalking it all up as similar to dyed-in-the-wool white -hooded KKK hangers-on who should really have already been relegated to the distant past of a misguided society. i understood that ms. burchill would almost surely never so vehemently attack jewish or black people to attempt a defense of another writer who had come under scrutiny for their remarks the way she did in defending suzanne moore. what i didn’t and still don’t understand is how she could possible justify her ranting hate-speech against transgender people.

but of course, as with many radical feminists (not all though) she obviously considers transgender women as not women at all. and as is the case in any oppression, the first step is to deny the group in question their goddess-given personhood.

suzanne moore’s observance of the ridiculous standard of beauty foisted upon women by the lecherous patriarchal society is of course spot on. but to single out a group of people as exemplifying the fake ideal was wrong. brazilian transsexuals are people…real people. and as women they are just as oppressed and suffer the same imposed standards as any other woman.

so, that furor has come and largely gone…tho not in my mind or the thoughts of others who were rightly offended by burchill’s remarks. now there is a new and even more outrageous reminder of closed-mindedness and outright oppression in the news. and it aims even lower…pardon the pun…as it seeks to bring back the same sort of pre-civil rights era segregation of transgender/transsexual folk: requiring them to show i.d. before being allowed to (wait for it) PEE!

what the fucking hell?

passing laws that actually make segregation of a whole community of people not only easier, but legal? sometimes i am certain that our evolution as a species is questionable. outside of lemmings, what other creatures on this planet seem to go out of the way to ensure their own demise? and isn’t that what we are doing when we legislate against a whole group of humans simply because we don’t like them? white people used to think it was fine to do this to black folk of course, along with any other people whose skin was darker than their own. straight folk think it’s quite alright to allow legislation against gay folk too, denying them the right to marry, serve their country without hiding who they are. but now! really?
it’s come to this?!!

despite anyone’s notions to the contrary, my daughter is and has always been a girl. she lives her life as a girl, she suffers being bullied by ignorant boy children because she is a girl. and like the older girls in our society, she will likely earn less, be scrutinised more closely and oppressed in precisely the same way as is common in our patriarchal world, regardless of her having been born with male genitalia.

so how dare anyone make laws that hinder equality and legalise oppression, against this or any other group of people whose only crime is that they are different? and really! bathroom privilege? what’s next? separate water fountains!!!

confound the judgmental minds

lately i’ve been doing alot of research…i won’t bother going through all of it here.
it was brought on by an article i had read that stated that men, who because of cancer or other mishap, have had to have their penis removed, experience “phantom limb” sensations commonly felt by other people who have had other kinds of amputations.

the article went on to say that transgender persons, both those who have had their previous genitalia re-fashioned into a vagina, and those who have had the penis removed entirely do NOT experience “phantom limb”.

this seems to me an important point.

my research led me to MRI studies of the brains of persons from both these groups. and then into another area, which is not directly related to the whole ‘transgender’ mind research, but was interesting in that it pointed out how much more there is for us to learn about the mind and identity.

this other avenue dealt with folk who “suffer” from xenomelia which is defined as the oppressive feeling the sufferers have that one or more of their limbs is ‘not theirs’. Here are a few of the names the condition has been known by:

Apotemnophilia
Amputee Identity Disorder
Body Identity Integrity Disorder.

now, before anyone can get the idea that i am attempting to equate transgender/transsexual persons with those that fit into this group let me assure you, it is not my intent.

what i found very interesting in my hours of finding and reading scholarly research about all of the conditions mentioned in this post, was that one’s identity ~ whether body identity, or gender identity ~ is born out by correlative MRI evidence that these minds are different, right down to the very structural and/or electrical activity, than the minds of neuro-typical, cis-gender persons.

this would seem to settle the question once and for all as to the authenticity of transgender and transsexual persons…it would seem to lay to rest all those trolls who comment at the bottoms of blogs and articles about trans-issues, that equate our transgender children’s identity with fantasies about what they’d like to be when they grow up…

it is highly unlikely that the functional MRI of a cis-gender child considering a future occupation would reveal much of a difference between one who wants to be an astronaut and another who sees himself as a ballet dancer. the brains of our transgender children are structurally and functionally more similar to their affirmed gender than to the gender to which they were assigned at birth.

with every further bit of research done with regard to brain/mind and body/identity, evidence emerges about just how little we know, and how much there is yet to learn. but one thing seems clear, our transgender children ARE exactly who they say they are. no matter what the trolls and closed-minded people might believe.

to any person raising a transgender child, i highly recommend doing some research. not because it gives authenticity to our kids ~ they have that whether or not science can validate their experience ~ but do so because being able to cite such research confounds the simpletons who judge.

then ignore both the research and the jerks…and simply love your child. that’s the fun part!
